CS599 Introduction to Grid Computing, Fall 2007

Graduate courses in Operating Systems (CS 555) and/or Networks (CS 551)

Course description

This course provides a graduate-level introduction to wide area distributed computing research, focusing on a wide range of issues in the area of Grid computing. The course will begin with a general introduction to Grid computing and spend one to two weeks focusing on each of the major topics of Grid computing research, including security, information management, resource management, data management, workflow management, semantic technologies and others. The course also examines the Open Grid Services Architecture for Grid environments and gives detailed overviews of a variety of Grid projects including: Globus, Condor, the Storage Resource Broker, and others. The course will explore Grid technologies in the context of existing infrastructures and application projects.

Students are required to work on an original project on a Grid computing topic studied in the course. There will be a list of suggested projects, or the students may choose another related topic. These projects will require significant programming work in Grid environments. Achieving a good grade will require that the project contain strong research content. Exams

There will be two midterm examination. There will be no final examination.
